The Lucky Sunbird
The Sunbird and The Lucky Sunbird belong to a series of fifteen sunbird sculptures begun by James Doran-Webb in 2020, each centred on the moment a sunbird reaches to take nectar from a dandelion. These two surviving works approach that small encounter with different movement and character.
The Sunbird
The Sunbird approaches the same moment in a more upright composition. The bird reaches towards the head of the dandelion with its wings open and tail falling behind, while the curved stem draws the two forms together. Layered driftwood gives the bird's wings and body a light, feathered texture, contrasting with the slender line of the flower and giving the sculpture a delicate sense of balance.

The Lucky Sunbird
The Lucky Sunbird catches the bird in full movement as it reaches towards the dandelion, its wings spread wide and its body lifted towards the flower. Long pieces of driftwood fan through the wings and tail, giving the small sculpture a surprisingly expansive silhouette. The outstretched pose makes the moment feel suspended between flight and feeding, with the dandelion completing the encounter that runs through the original sunbird series.
