The Destriers Jump

The Destriers Jump
The Destrier's Descent (left) and Destrier's Ascent (right)

Two magnificent Destriers soar above a dramatic water feature, their forms alive with power and motion. Crafted from long-dead wood and repurposed marine-grade stainless steel, the installation captures a moment of pure, suspended energy. Cascading water spills from the four sides of the water feature, lit from beneath by a series of lights that cause the water to shimmer like diamonds beneath the horses’ hooves.

The lead horse appears to defy gravity, supported only by its rear fetlocks as it skims the water’s surface. Behind it, the ascending horse gives chase—locked in a timeless pursuit.

James Doran-Webb is unique in his ability to animate wood with such expressive force and structural dexterity. With a lifetime of experience working within his medium, he creates sculptures that both celebrate and transcend nature. This installation is a culmination of that rare mastery.
