The Chelsea Stags
James’ Red Stags are among his most beloved and iconic works. This year at the Chelsea Flower Show, he unveils two striking new additions to the series.
The first is a commanding baying stag, poised in mid-call, standing proudly atop a base of cantilevered sleeper rails—salvaged relics from early 20th-century steam railroads once used to transport sugarcane to the mills. The sculpture creates a powerful contrast between the raw, industrial past and the primal force of nature captured in the stag’s cry.
Beside him, a moment of calm: a resting stag lies peacefully, forelegs tucked beneath his chest, embodying stillness and quiet strength. Together, they offer a dynamic narrative of energy and repose—an ode to the wild, framed by history.
