Horse Maquettes
Maquette of Symphony, Maquette of Unbridled and Maquette of Vivace are three individual driftwood horse sculptures by James Doran-Webb. Presented together, each takes a different approach to posture and movement, from an elevated stance to a fully extended stride and a more collected pose.
Maquette of Symphony
Maquette of Symphony rises into a lifted, animated stance, with the body held upright and one foreleg raised clear of the base. The mane and tail break into loose, irregular lines of driftwood around the more strongly defined form of the horse, giving the sculpture movement from every angle. Its elevated posture gives this maquette a particularly energetic silhouette.

Maquette of Unbridled
Maquette of Unbridled stretches through an extended stride, the body carried forward between reaching forelegs and powerful hindquarters. The long horizontal movement of the horse contrasts with the upright form of Symphony beside it, while the driftwood follows the changing direction of the neck, body and legs. The result is a compact sculpture with a strong sense of forward momentum.

Maquette of Vivace
Maquette of Vivace holds a more collected pose, with one foreleg lifted and the head lowered into the movement of the body. Curving pieces of driftwood carry through the neck, mane and tail, while the compact stance concentrates the energy of the horse into a smaller space. The lifted leg and bowed line of the head give the sculpture a poised, rhythmic quality.
